Derrick was raised from a polygamous family in a rural area of Western Kenya. The environment and circumstances surrounding his life, even though still young, have led him to success. From a very young age, Derrick kept himself busy with youth empowerment and community development activities. For example, he has been a volunteer teacher in secondary schools in his local area which has given him great opportunities to impact positively on youths in secondary schools and to explore the challenges that youth face.

He is also a member of The Unilife Movement, a youth-run organization that creates a platform for youth participation in personal development and social transformation, education, mentorship, leadership, training, awareness campaigns and service. He is the ambassador of the movement in The University of Nairobi—Lower Kabete campus.

Derrick is the founder of Kabuchai Youths Business and Innovation Forum (KYBIF), an interactive platform in Bungoma County—Kenya where youths share business and investment ideas, network and learn entrepreneurial skills. He is also the founder of Tuinuane Youth Group, a Kabuchai constituency based youth group whose core objectives among others is enhancing financial independence of youths and curbing unemployment through provision of investment opportunities, financial support and advice and moral support.

His versatile nature and passion for learning, experimentation and improvising have led Derrick into diverse environments and compromising situations which have shaped him into a peer counselor and academic career developer.
